Dream symbols
Symbols are the most searched part of any dream database and the most abused. A symbol does not have a fixed meaning; it has a range of associations that shift with your own history, the emotion attached to it, and what else was in the dream. Every symbol page here shows that range rather than picking one entry from it.
- SymbolA crackCracks are one of the few things dreams reliably show growing, which is unusual: dreams produce states far more readily than transitions, and a spreading crack is a transition being watched.
- SymbolA holeA hole is an absence with edges, and dreams handle it the way they handle every absence: the edges are generated and what is beyond them is not. Dreamers report being unable to see in, and being certain about what is there.
- SymbolA language you do not speakDreamers report understanding and speaking languages they do not know, fluently and without effort. What is happening is not translation: the dream is supplying comprehension the way it supplies every other kind of knowing.
- SymbolAlcoholTwo very different entries share this subject. Ordinary alcohol dreams are unremarkable. Drinking dreams in people who have stopped drinking are a recognised and well-documented phenomenon, and those deserve to be treated seriously.
- SymbolA lock that will not lockOne of the most reported and least written-about dreams there is. The door will not lock, the bolt will not seat, the key turns and nothing engages, and the dreamer keeps trying.
- SymbolA nameNames fail in dreams in every direction: the dreamer cannot recall one, cannot say one, is called by the wrong one, or knows one without ever having heard it. All four are the same mechanism.
- SymbolAn announcementA voice with authority saying something the dreamer cannot make out. It combines the two things dreams do worst with language: they cannot generate content, and they barely generate sound at all.
- SymbolAn empty chairThe exception in this file: a chair is not reported through failure but through absence. The empty chair is one of the most quietly affecting images in the database and it belongs with the grief material.
- SymbolA threadThe pulled thread that does not end is a small, common and oddly memorable dream. It is the multiplication finding at the smallest scale: something that should be finite and is not, because nothing is measuring it.
- SymbolBack and shouldersTwo quite different things share this entry: carrying weight, which frequently tracks a real ache, and the sense of something behind you, which is the being-watched material approached from the body.
- SymbolBagBags are reported through what is not in them. The characteristic dream is searching a bag that should contain something and finding it does not, repeatedly, in a way that never resolves.
- SymbolBedThe bed is the one object a dreamer is actually touching while they dream about it, and that shows in the reports. A large share of frightening bed dreams are sleep paralysis rather than dreams about a bed.
- SymbolBicycleBicycles fail by balance rather than by control, which makes them different from every other vehicle here. The characteristic report is wobbling, and dreamers describe the effort of staying upright rather than of steering.
- SymbolBlanketThe one object in this file that is physically present while you dream about it. Weight, heat and restriction from real bedding are among the most readily incorporated sensations there are, and this dream is frequently the bed rather than the mind.
- SymbolBloodBlood in dreams is reported far more often as vitality, kinship or alarm than as violence. The most useful question is whose it was, and whether anyone in the dream reacted.
- SymbolBonesBones are reported without much fear, which is the surprising thing about them. Dreamers describe skeletons and skulls with curiosity or detachment far more often than with dread.
- SymbolBookBooks are reported almost entirely through the failure to read them, and that failure is one of the few dream phenomena with a solid explanation behind it: text in dreams is genuinely unstable.
- SymbolBoxThe unopened box is the report. Dreamers describe knowing something is inside, frequently knowing what, and either not opening it or waking before they do.
- SymbolBreadFood is reported far less often in dreams than people expect, and taste is reported least of all. Where bread appears it is usually being shared or prepared rather than eaten, which is the more interesting fact.
- SymbolBridgeBridges are transition made literal, and they are almost always reported with a decision attached: cross, turn back, or find that the bridge will not hold.
- SymbolCakeSweet food is reported for the occasion around it rather than for the food, and the birthday cake is the clearest case: dreamers report the candles, the people and the singing, and rarely mention eating anything.
- SymbolCameraCameras split into two dreams that share an object: taking a picture, which never quite works, and being recorded, which belongs with the being-watched material and is far more unsettling.
- SymbolCandleCandles are reported for one event above all others: going out. The extinguishing is what dreamers remember, and it is usually described as happening on its own rather than being done.
- SymbolCarThe car is one of the most common modern dream settings, and the reports cluster around control: who is driving, whether the brakes work, and whether the dreamer can see where they are going.
- SymbolClockClocks in dreams are notoriously unreliable, the time changes when you look twice, and that instability is a well-known feature of dreaming rather than a symbol. Where clocks do carry meaning, it is almost always about lateness.
- SymbolClothesClothes in dreams are reported through inappropriateness rather than through the garments. The recurring situation is being dressed wrongly for where you are, and discovering it in front of people.
- SymbolCloudsClouds are the part of a dream sky most likely to behave impossibly, because motion is expensive to generate and dreams do not bother. Clouds that do not move, or that move far too fast, are extremely common.
- SymbolCoatCoats are reported through pockets and through ownership. Finding something in a pocket is one of the more common small dream events, and it follows the container principle exactly: what is in there is made when the hand goes in.
- SymbolCurtainCurtains are reported for movement. A curtain moving with no draught is one of the more effective unsettling images there is, and it produces unease without anything being behind it.
- SymbolDarknessDarkness in dreams is not the absence of an image. Dreamers describe an active inability to see, frequently with light sources that do not work, and that failure is one of the most reliable features of dream perception.
- SymbolDollDolls produce unease with no threat attached, and the reason is specific: a doll is a face that does not behave like a face. The reports belong with the mask and faceless-person material rather than with objects.
- SymbolDoorDoors are the most common transition object in dreams, and what matters is almost never the door. It is whether it opened, whether you went through, and whether you knew what was behind it.
- SymbolDrawerDrawers are searched, and the search does not end. What makes them distinct from the bag reports is that a drawer produces contents rather than hiding them: dreamers report finding more each time they look.
- SymbolDustDust is how a dream says time has passed, and dreamers read it that way immediately. What is worth noticing is the second detail: whether anything has disturbed it, which is the part reports return to.
- SymbolEars and hearingHearing failures are reported more than hearing itself, which fits the general scarcity of sound in dreams: it is easier for a dream to produce the absence of hearing than the content of it.
- SymbolEclipseReported rarely and remembered for years by those who report it. The characteristic feature is not darkness but wrongness of time: daylight failing at the wrong hour, which dreamers find more disturbing than night would be.
- SymbolEggEgg reports are dominated by fragility and by what is inside. The most reported single image is a broken one, and dreamers describe the breaking as accidental and slightly shameful.
- SymbolEyesEyes appear in two very different report types: eyes that will not open, which is a physical experience with a physical explanation, and eyes that are looking, which belongs with the being-watched material.
- SymbolFaceFaces are the most attended thing in dream content and the least stable. A face that changes, that will not resolve, or that belongs to the wrong person is among the most reported and most unsettling experiences there is.
- SymbolFeetFeet and legs are reported almost entirely through failure to move: legs that will not run, feet that stick, and steps that produce no distance. All of it has one explanation, and it is physiological rather than symbolic.
- SymbolFireFire is the most double-edged element in dream reports: destruction and purification, anger and warmth. What decides the reading is whether you are near it or in it, and whether you lit it.
- SymbolFlowersFlowers are among the few dream images where colour is reliably noticed, which is unusual given how little colour is reported generally. Where a flower is remembered, its colour usually is too.
- SymbolFogFog is reported less often than rain or storms and is more consistent in what it does: it removes information. The reports are about not being able to see rather than about anything in the fog.
- SymbolFootprintsEvidence of a person who is not there, and the reports turn on a single question the dreamer answers without evidence: whose. The certainty arrives complete, as it does throughout this database.
- SymbolFruitFruit is reported for its state rather than its kind: ripe, unripe, or rotten. Taste is almost never reported, which constrains what a fruit dream can be about far more than the traditions suggest.
- SymbolGlassGlass does two things in dreams and they are unrelated: it separates without concealing, and it breaks. The separating version is the more distinctive, and dreamers describe being able to see somebody and not reach them.
- SymbolGlassesGlasses dreams are seeing dreams. The reports are almost entirely about vision failing in a way the dreamer cannot correct, and they are considerably more common among people who actually wear them.
- SymbolGrassGrass is almost never the subject of a dream and is reported constantly as ground. Where it becomes the subject, it is because it is too long, and that version carries a specific and quite mild guilt.
- SymbolGunThe most reported gun dream is one where the gun does not work. Trigger pulls that produce nothing, bullets with no force, and aim that will not hold are described far more often than any shot.
- SymbolHairHair dreams cluster around change and exposure, and hair loss is the most reported of them. The image sits very close to teeth dreams, which are among the best-documented dream themes there are.
- SymbolHandsHands are the single most useful thing in a dream to look at, because they are the most unreliable thing dreams render. Extra fingers, missing fingers and hands that change on a second look are the classic reality check.
- SymbolHatHats are reported through loss and through wrongness: one blown off and chased, or one the dreamer is wearing that is not theirs and cannot be removed.
- SymbolHearing your nameOne of the most widely reported sleep experiences there is, and one of the most reassuring to have explained: hearing your name called as you fall asleep or wake is common, documented, and not a sign of anything.
- SymbolHeartThe heart is the body part most likely to be reporting something real. Heart rate genuinely rises during REM and during nightmares, and a dream about a racing heart is frequently a dream about a racing heart.
- SymbolHungerLike thirst, hunger in a dream may be a real signal, and that should be ruled out first. Unlike thirst, it is reported less often, which is itself interesting given how much dream content involves food situations.
- SymbolIceIce is reported for one thing above all: bearing weight it should not. Walking on a frozen surface and listening for it to give is the characteristic image, and the listening is the part dreamers remember.
- SymbolIllnessDreams do not detect illness. That is the most important sentence here, and it needs saying because the opposite claim is common, is frightening, and has no evidence behind it.
- SymbolInstructionsInstructions in dreams cannot be followed, and the reason is mechanical rather than symbolic: a set of steps has to persist while being carried out, and dream content does not persist.
- SymbolJewelleryThe ring entry covers loss and the bond it stands for. The rest of the jewellery reports are about inheritance: pieces belonging to somebody who has died, and dreamers describe the object with unusual precision.
- SymbolKeyKeys almost never appear alone. They appear as a problem. Lost, wrong, too many, or belonging to a lock the dreamer cannot find. The dream is usually about access rather than about the key.
- SymbolKnifeKnife reports divide by who is holding it, and the two halves are so different they barely share a subject. Being threatened with one is a straightforward fear dream; holding one is reported with a distinctive and uncomfortable ambivalence.
- SymbolKnockingA knock is one of the most likely dream sounds to have been real, and it is worth checking that first. It is also one of the few dream events that reliably wakes people.
- SymbolLadderLadders are reported through instability and insufficiency: one that is not long enough, not secure, or missing rungs. Very few reports involve a ladder that simply works.
- SymbolLeavesLeaves are one of the few things dreams reliably show in motion, and falling leaves are reported far more than leaves on a tree. Motion is expensive for a dream to generate, so this is worth noticing.
- SymbolLetterLetters in dreams are almost never read. The characteristic report is an envelope that is not opened, or is opened and cannot be made out, and the dreamer usually knows who it is from without evidence.
- SymbolLightningLightning is reported for its suddenness and for what it reveals rather than for danger. The characteristic report is a landscape briefly lit, and dreamers remember what they saw rather than the flash.
- SymbolMachineMachines in dreams are reported through two failures that mirror each other: one that will not start, and one that will not stop. The second is considerably more common and more distressing.
- SymbolMapA map is the worst possible object to hand a dreamer. It is text, it is fine detail, and it claims to describe a space that has no underlying model, so it fails on three counts at once.
- SymbolMaskMasks are reported for one reason: they remove a face that the dreamer needs to read. The unease they produce is the same unease the faceless-person reports describe, and the two belong together.
- SymbolMeatMeat is reported by its state, and the state decides everything: cooked meat is a meal and belongs with the social material, raw meat produces disgust, and a carcass produces something closer to the bones material.
- SymbolMilkMilk is reported almost entirely through spoiling, and dreamers describe the discovery rather than the substance: pouring it, and finding it has turned.
- SymbolMirrorMirrors in dreams are almost never about vanity. Dreamers overwhelmingly report the reflection being wrong (delayed, aged, a stranger, or absent) and it is the wrongness, not the mirror, that carries the meaning.
- SymbolMoneyMoney dreams are extremely common and track waking financial concern more reliably than they track anything symbolic. Finding it and losing it are reported about equally, and both usually arrive during periods when money is already on the dreamer's mind.
- SymbolMoonThe moon is one of the few dream symbols people usually report positively. It appears more often as light and atmosphere than as an object, and reports cluster around calm, strangeness and being watched over rather than watched.
- SymbolMotorbikeMotorbikes fail by speed. Where the car reports are about brakes and steering, these are about going faster than intended and being unable to slow, with nothing between the rider and the road.
- SymbolMusicMusicians dream about music substantially more than non-musicians, which is one of the cleanest continuity findings in dream research. For everybody else, music in a dream is rare and worth a note.
- SymbolNailsNails behave in dreams exactly like teeth and hair: they come away, they grow wrongly, and they multiply. All three are keratin, all three are reported the same way, and that pattern is more interesting than any of them alone.
- SymbolNot being able to breatheThe one entry in this database most likely to be about your body rather than your mind. Suffocation dreams are frequently the sleeper actually struggling to breathe, and where they recur that is worth investigating medically rather than interpreting.
- SymbolPhoneThe phone that will not work is one of the most reported modern dream frustrations: wrong numbers, no signal, keys that will not press, and calls that do not connect. It belongs squarely with the effort-without-effect family.
- SymbolPhotographPhotographs in dreams behave like text: they do not hold still. The most reported version is a picture whose contents change or are wrong, and it is one of the more effective reality checks available.
- SymbolPregnancyPregnancy dreams are extremely common during actual pregnancy and are reported by people who are not and cannot be pregnant. The two populations need separating before anything useful can be said, and most sites do not separate them.
- SymbolPuddleA small amount of water that behaves impossibly. Puddles in dreams are frequently deeper than they can be, and the step into one is the moment dreamers remember.
- SymbolRainRain is one of the most common weather conditions in dream reports and one of the least dramatic. It usually sets the tone rather than driving the dream, and the reported feeling ranges from cleansing to grim with no consistent pattern.
- SymbolRainbowRainbows are reported rarely and almost always positively, which makes them unusual. They are also frequently wrong: in the wrong place relative to the sun, doubled oddly, or persisting far longer than one can.
- SymbolRingAlmost every reported ring dream is a losing dream. The ring is noticed because it is gone, and dreamers report checking the hand, which is one of the more specific physical actions in the whole database.
- SymbolRootsRoots are reported for one thing above all: extent. Dreamers describe a root system far larger than the plant above it, and describe knowing that without seeing it.
- SymbolRopeRope appears in two roles that share nothing: as a restraint and as a lifeline. The reports are entirely determined by which, and the restraint version overlaps heavily with sleep paralysis.
- SymbolSaltOne of the few substances where taste is actually reported in dreams, which puts it in a very small group. Where it appears, dreamers usually mention tasting it, and that is unusual enough to be the finding.
- SymbolScreenScreens in dreams do not work, and the reason is not symbolic. A screen is a surface covered in text and fine detail, which is precisely what dreams cannot render, so the reports are dominated by failure to read.
- SymbolSeedsSeeds are reported through the act rather than the object: planting, scattering, or finding some. The dream almost never shows what happens next, which is the most consistent thing about them.
- SymbolShoesShoes are reported almost entirely by their absence or unsuitability. The commonest report is being unable to find them when they are needed, and it usually arrives inside a dream about being late.
- SymbolSilenceMost dreams are quieter than dreamers realise, so silence is usually only noticed when it is doing something: a scene that should have sound and does not, which produces a specific and hard-to-name unease.
- SymbolSkinSkin reports are the ones most likely to have a real physical cause, and the physical question should be asked first. Itching, crawling and heat are all sensations a sleeping body can genuinely produce.
- SymbolSkyThe sky is the single best reality check in a dream, because it is large, always present, and almost never right. Dreamers who learn to look up report noticing more inconsistencies there than anywhere else.
- SymbolSmellSmell is the rarest sense in dream reports by a wide margin, which makes any dream containing one worth recording. Where a smell does appear, dreamers almost always recognise it, and it is almost always connected to a person or a place.
- SymbolSmokeSmoke is a fire the dreamer cannot find, and the searching is the report. It is also one of the few dream images where smell appears, which is rare enough to be worth noting on its own.
- SymbolSnakeSnakes are among the most reported dream animals and the most contradictory. Across traditions they carry both threat and renewal, the bite and the shed skin, and which one is active in your dream is usually decided by the fear, not by the snake.
- SymbolSnowSnow is reported for silence more than for cold. Dreamers describe the quiet of it first and the temperature rarely, which is consistent with how weakly dreams reproduce temperature at all.
- SymbolSpiderSpiders join snakes as the animals most over-represented in dreams relative to real encounters. Reports split hard between the creature and the web, and the web is the more interesting half.
- SymbolStairsStairs are among the most common architectural features in dream reports, and the reported difficulty is usually with the stairs themselves: too steep, too narrow, endless, or not quite where they should be.
- SymbolStarsStars are reported for scale and for wrongness. Dreamers describe a night sky as overwhelming rather than pretty, and constellations that do not exist are one of the more common impossibilities people notice afterwards.
- SymbolSteam and mistDistinct from fog, which is a landscape and belongs to weather. Steam is indoors, it is warm, and it is one of the few dream images where the temperature is reported as reliably as the appearance.
- SymbolStomachThe stomach is where dreams put dread, and the reports describe a physical sensation rather than an emotion. Dreamers say the feeling arrived in the body before anything happened, which fits what is known about how dream emotion works.
- SymbolStormStorms are among the more emotionally intense weather reports and behave in dreams the way threats behave: the dreamer is looking for shelter, watching it approach, or already inside it. The approach is reported more often than the impact.
- SymbolSuitcaseThe suitcase is the packing dream in object form, and the reports share its structure exactly: a case that will not close, contents that keep appearing, and a departure that never happens.
- SymbolSunThe sun is rarely looked at in dreams and frequently behaves impossibly: in the wrong place, more than one of them, or shining without lighting anything. That misbehaviour is more useful than any reading.
- SymbolSweating and heatHeat in a dream is frequently heat in the room, and that is checkable in one night. Where it is not, night sweats have medical causes worth knowing about rather than interpreting.
- SymbolTableA table in a dream is a cast list. Dreamers report who was around it and rarely report the table, and the guest list is frequently impossible in the way the party reports describe.
- SymbolTeethTeeth falling out is one of the most reported dreams in every population studied, and one of the few where the research is genuinely interesting: it correlates with dental irritation during sleep more strongly than with any of the meanings usually offered for it.
- SymbolThings changing sizeA specific and well-described experience: the dreamer or the room changes size, or proportions stop making sense. It has a name outside dream research and a documented association with migraine and with the edges of sleep.
- SymbolThornsOne of the few dream images that reliably produces pain, which is rare enough to be the most interesting thing about it. Dreams under-report pain badly, and thorns are an exception worth noting.
- SymbolTongue and mouthThe commonest mouth dream is one of the most unpleasant in the database: a mouth full of something that cannot be got rid of. It sits directly beside the teeth dreams and shares their likely physical causes.
- SymbolTreeTrees are reported as fixed points. Dreamers describe a single tree in a landscape, remember its position precisely, and return to it across dreams more often than to almost any other object.
- SymbolUniformUniform dreams are entitlement dreams. The characteristic report is wearing one the dreamer has no right to and waiting to be found out, which puts them with the exposure material rather than with clothing.
- SymbolVoicesA voice with no speaker is one of the more common auditory reports, and where it happens at the edge of sleep it has a specific and well-documented explanation that has nothing to do with meaning.
- SymbolWardrobeTwo dreams share this object and they are not related. A wardrobe full of clothes that are not yours, and a wardrobe with something in it, which is a childhood fear that persists into adult reports more than people expect.
- SymbolWaterWater is the most frequently reported dream element, and its readings are unusually consistent across traditions: emotion, the unconscious, and whatever is too large to be argued with. Depth and clarity carry most of the meaning.
- SymbolWeedsWeeds are the plant version of the multiplication reports that run through the insect, rat and rabbit entries: they increase faster than they can be dealt with, and the dreamer never finishes.
- SymbolWindWind is one of the few things in a dream that is felt as much as seen, and dreamers report force against the body more than they report anything visual. It is also the most likely weather to be a real sound in the room.
- SymbolWindowWindows work as a boundary you can see through but not pass, and the reports divide almost entirely by which side of it the dreamer is on. Looking out is calm; being looked at through one is among the more unsettling reports in the database.
- SymbolWoundInjury in dreams is reported vividly and almost always without pain, which is the most consistent and most surprising finding about it. Dreamers see the wound and do not feel it.
- SymbolYour own shadowDistinct from the shadow person in the Bestiary, which is a figure. This is the dreamer's own shadow, and it is one of the most reliable consistency failures a dream produces: wrong direction, wrong shape, delayed, or absent entirely.
