Photographs in dreams behave like text: they do not hold still. The most reported version is a picture whose contents change or are wrong, and it is one of the more effective reality checks available.

Instability dominates. Dreamers describe looking at a photograph, looking away and finding it different, or noticing somebody in it who should not be.
A face that cannot be resolved is the second theme and connects directly to the faceless-person material.
Old photographs, usually family ones, are a distinct and warmer group, and people regularly report images they have actually seen.
Photographs of the dreamer that they do not remember being taken appear in a smaller group and are described as unsettling.

Difficult readings
A photograph containing somebody who should not be there is one of the more quietly disturbing images reported, and dreamers describe it as worse than an overt threat.
The unresolvable face produces the same unease as masks and faceless figures.
Psychological perspectives
Fine detail is not stable in dreams, and a photograph is nothing but fine detail. The same mechanism that makes text unreadable makes a photograph shift.
What makes this more disturbing than unstable text is the object's function. A photograph is supposed to be the fixed record, so its instability contradicts the one thing it is for.
That contradiction is probably why it works so well as a reality check.
Cultural and historical
Photography is under two centuries old and there is no traditional dream reading of it, which the entry states plainly.
Beliefs about photographs capturing something of a person exist in a number of contexts and are often misreported. Where a dreamer holds one, it changes the report considerably.
