Dreaming about rain
Rain is one of the most common weather conditions in dream reports and one of the least dramatic. It usually sets the tone rather than driving the dream, and the reported feeling ranges from cleansing to grim with no consistent pattern.

Rain appears in a great many dream reports as setting rather than as subject, which makes it a useful corrective to the way dictionaries work: not everything in a dream is a symbol, and some things are the weather.
Where dreamers do report it as significant, the reports split by intensity. Light rain is described calmly, sometimes as pleasant, and is frequently associated with relief. Heavy rain and downpours are described with more urgency, and the reports shade towards being unable to see, unable to get anywhere and unable to get dry.
Being rained on indoors, or rain coming through a ceiling, is a distinct and more unsettling report and belongs closer to the house material than to weather.

Difficult readings
Heavy rain that prevents movement or vision belongs with the wider family of dreams where the environment obstructs, alongside fog and mud.
Rain indoors is reported as more distressing than the volume warrants and usually concerns the building rather than the water.
Psychological perspectives
Continuity accounts for a great deal, particularly in wet climates: people dream about the weather they have.
Beyond that, the useful observation from the reports is that rain acts on the dream the way a soundtrack acts on a film. It changes how everything else is felt without being the subject, and dreamers frequently describe it only when asked.
Cultural and historical
Rain is read favourably across an unusually wide range of traditions, and the reason is not mysterious: in agricultural societies rain is provision.
Classical Islamic dream manuals treat rain as mercy in most circumstances, with the reading changing when it becomes destructive, which is the same measure-versus-excess logic they apply to fire.
The cleansing reading is old and widespread, and the sheer breadth of agreement here is unusual in this database and probably reflects the shared experience of farming rather than anything about dreams.
