Dreaming about clothes
Clothes in dreams are reported through inappropriateness rather than through the garments. The recurring situation is being dressed wrongly for where you are, and discovering it in front of people.

Wrongness for the occasion dominates. Dreamers describe arriving somewhere formal in nightclothes, somewhere casual in a suit, or in something that is simply not theirs.
Getting dressed is the second theme and is nearly always unsuccessful: garments that will not go on, that are inside out, or that keep being replaced by others. This version arrives inside late dreams reliably.
Underwear alone is a distinct report and sits between clothes and nakedness, and dreamers describe it as more embarrassing than being fully naked, which is worth recording because it is counterintuitive.
Uniforms produce a separate group again, usually involving wearing one the dreamer is not entitled to.

Positive readings
Reports of clothes that are right, or that the dreamer likes, exist and are described with a specific pleasure that is not usually recorded because it does not generate a question.
Some dreamers report clothes belonging to someone who has died, and those reports are tender and belong with the grief material.
Difficult readings
The exposure version is embarrassing rather than frightening, and it is one of the most widely shared dream experiences there is.
The cannot-get-dressed version is a late dream and belongs with that group. It is frustrating rather than shameful.
Psychological perspectives
Social exposure is a recurring dream theme with a good claim to being near universal, and clothes are the most direct mechanism available for producing it.
The fact that partial dress is reported as worse than full nakedness is genuinely interesting and is not well explained. One plausible reading is that partial dress implies a failed attempt at conformity, where nakedness implies none.
The dressing-fails version is the obstacle machinery again, and is better grouped with the late dreams than with the exposure ones.
Cultural and historical
Dress codes are among the most culturally specific rules that exist, which makes this one of the entries where a single reading is least possible.
The garments of the dead appear in a number of traditions with specific practices attached.
What counts as improperly dressed varies so much that a dream about it can only be read against the dreamer's own rules, and the entry says so rather than supplying a key.

Reasonably supported: the continuity of dream content with social concern.
