Dreaming about counting
Dreams do not count, and once you know that a great deal of otherwise strange dream content becomes ordinary. A total recounted comes out differently, because there was never a fixed number of things.
Also searched as: counting in a dream, how many were there, the number kept changing, too many to count
The characteristic report is a total that will not hold. Dreamers count, count again, and get a different answer, and frequently do not find this strange at the time.
More commonly the counting is not attempted and the quantity is simply unstable: a crowd nobody could enumerate, insects that keep multiplying, seats that do not match the people at a table.
Where a quantity is small, up to about four, it is reported reliably, because those are apprehended directly rather than counted. The three entry sets that out.
Above that, any number in a dream report was either counted, which is unreliable, or supplied afterwards.
Common associations
- No fixed quantity, which is the finding.
- Recounting gives a different answer.
- Multiplication without limit, in the aversive reports.
- Small numbers, which are the exception.
Positive readings
A very good reality check and one almost nobody uses. Count something, look away, count again. It is more reliable than most published checks and requires nothing.
It also explains a whole family of unpleasant dreams at once, which is worth more than any individual interpretation.
Difficult readings
Nothing directly, though the entry explains several unpleasant patterns: the insects that keep coming, the weeds that keep growing, the locks that keep appearing, the meal there is never enough of.
All of them are the same fact and none of them is about the subject.
Psychological perspectives
Dream content is generated at the point of attention and not stored, so there is no set of discrete items for a count to be a count of. A dream produces the impression of a quantity, and asking for a number produces a number rather than retrieving one.
That single mechanism accounts for the crowd, the swarm, the multiplying obstacle, the mismatched seating and the insufficient meal, which are described in nine separate entries here.
Subitising explains the exception. Small quantities are apprehended directly rather than counted, and those survive.
Cultural and historical
Numerological traditions assume dream numbers were reliably perceived, which the numbers entry addresses at more length.
Counting as a way of getting to sleep is folk practice nearly everywhere and is unrelated to any of this.
What the sleep science says
Well documented in perception research: subitising, the direct apprehension of quantities up to about four.
Reasonably supported: dream content is generated at attention rather than stored, which is why quantities do not persist.
Well documented: the instability of numbers read in dreams.
Your own context
- Did you count, or did you know?
- Was it more than four?
- Did you count twice?
- Did the total hold?
If this recurs
This is the entry to read if a recurring dream involves too many of something. The multiplication is the mechanism, not the meaning, and it will not resolve because there is nothing to resolve.
Emotions often reported

Questions for reflection
These are for your journal, not for us. Nothing you write is shared.
- Did I actually count?
- Was it more than four?
- Did I get the same answer twice?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.

Dreamers’ accounts
How dreams of counting have gone for other people, in their own words. Nothing here is an interpretation of anyone else's dream. It is a record of what happened and what it was like.
Nothing here yet. Be the first to say how this has gone for you.

- NumberNumbers in dreamsNumbers behave badly in dreams for a documented reason: digits are text, and text in dreams does not hold still. A number you are certain about was probably assembled on waking, and knowing that changes what is worth a line in the journal.

Records that mention counting
These pages link to counting, either as something reported in the same dream or as a related subject. This page does not point back at all of them, so the list is assembled rather than chosen.
