Two records together

A forest and the sense of being watched

The most consistent eerie pairing in the database, and the reports agree on the part that matters: nothing ever appears.

What the combination adds

Dreamers describe trees, low light, and the complete certainty that something is aware of them. Then they describe nothing happening.

The watcher is almost never seen. In the great majority of reports it does not emerge, does not approach and is not identified, and the dream ends or moves on with the certainty intact.

That is the unearned knowing this database is built on, arriving in the setting best suited to it. A forest is visually dense and endlessly extendable, so there is always somewhere unrendered for attention to point at, and the dream never has to produce what is there.

The being-watched page describes the same structure indoors and it is milder. What the forest adds is that there is no wall to put your back to.

The two records

Each is a full entry in its own right, and each covers ground this page does not.

  • Forest

Forests in dreams are about limited visibility more than about trees. The recurring reports are of not being able to see far, losing a path, and the specific quality of being watched by nothing identifiable.

  • Being watched

The sense of being watched is one of the most consistently reported dream experiences and one of the hardest to describe, because the watcher is usually never seen. In sleep paralysis it has a specific, well-documented physiological basis.

Worth asking

Did anything ever appear? How did I know it was there? Which direction was I avoiding?
