Dreaming about an ex you had forgotten
Why did I dream about an ex I have not thought about for years?
The version that most unsettles people, because the obvious explanation is unavailable: they genuinely were not thinking about this person.
It happens, commonly, and it does not mean anything has resurfaced.
The colleague entry explains most of it. Dream characters follow availability rather than significance, and availability is not only about this week: old settings and the people who belonged to them recur far out of proportion to how much anybody thinks about them. Old teachers, old workplaces, old houses. An ex is a person attached to a period, and periods arrive whole.
So the dream is not evidence of unfinished feeling, and a dreamer who reaches that conclusion is usually reasoning from the wrong premise: that dreams cast by importance. They do not.
Where there is genuine unfinished business, the waking situation is the subject and the dream adds nothing to it.
Where this reads well
The availability account removes a worry people carry quietly, and it is checkable: look at who else from that period turned up in the same dream.
Where it is harder
Dreamers report real discomfort about what it says about them, and it says nothing about them.
Worth asking yourself
Who else from that period was in it? How long ago was it really? Was I thinking about them at all?
Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
