Dreaming about an ex-partner who has died

What does it mean to dream about a former partner who has died?

A group that belongs with the grief material rather than with the rest of this record, and it deserves saying separately because the reports are quite different.

These are bereavement dreams. The dead-relative entry covers the ground properly: they are common, they are a normal part of grieving, and a large proportion of people who have them describe them afterwards as comforting rather than distressing.

What complicates them here is that the relationship had already ended once. Dreamers describe a specific difficulty in knowing what they are entitled to feel, and frequently report having had nowhere to put the grief at the time.

That is worth naming rather than interpreting. Grief for somebody you were no longer with is real, it is commonly unacknowledged, and the dream is not asking you to resolve the relationship.

Where this reads well

Reported as valuable far more often than as painful, in line with the wider bereavement material.

Where it is harder

The lack of a place to put it is the durable part, and it is a waking difficulty rather than a dream one.

Worth asking yourself

How did I feel about having had it, a day later? Did I have anywhere to grieve at the time?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
