What does it mean to dream about steam?
Distinct from fog, which is a landscape. Steam is indoors, it is warm, and it is one of the few dream images where the temperature is reported as reliably as the appearance.
Dreamers mention heat unprompted, which is unusual given how weakly dreams represent temperature. The ice entry finds the opposite: cold barely registers even in a snow-covered scene.
That asymmetry is worth noting. Warmth appears to survive into dream content better than cold does, and the sweating entry suggests why: a warm room is a live signal being received, where a cold one usually is not.
So a real warm room is a plausible contributor and is worth ruling out first.
