Dreaming about restaurant
Restaurants combine two things dreams handle badly: text that will not resolve and food that has no taste. The menu is the most reported object and it is almost never readable.

The menu dominates. Dreamers describe holding one, looking at it, and being unable to make out anything, or finding it different on a second look.
Ordering rarely completes. Nobody comes, the order is wrong, or the dream moves on before the food arrives.
Where food does arrive, taste is generally absent, in line with the general finding about gustatory content.
Who is at the table is frequently more informative than any of it, and dreamers often realise this only on review.

Meals with people are reported warmly and belong with the kitchen material, which covers the social side properly.
The menu is a good reality check for the same reason any text is.

Mild frustration rather than distress. Being ignored by staff appears occasionally and belongs with the being-ignored material.
Psychological perspectives
Text instability accounts for the menu, and the weak representation of taste accounts for the food. Between them they explain most of what these reports contain.
The incompletion is the general obstacle machinery.
What is left is the company, which is why the entry ends up pointing at the kitchen and the friend entries rather than at itself.
Cultural and historical
Shared meals carry substantial significance nearly everywhere, but the restaurant specifically is a modern institution and has no interpretive tradition.
Hospitality, being fed by somebody, is a serious matter in many cultures and that material belongs with the bread and kitchen entries.
