Two records together

Water and drowning

The record everything else in this section hangs off, and the one dream in it most likely to be reporting something about your body rather than your mind.

What the combination adds

Water is the most flexible setting in the database: calm, threatening, still, rising, clear, opaque. Drowning is where it stops being a setting.

Check the breathing first. Nasal congestion, a heavy duvet, sleeping position and alcohol all produce suffocation dreams, and so does obstructive sleep apnoea, which is common, frequently undiagnosed and treatable. Waking gasping, heavy snoring, a dry mouth and daytime tiredness are the pattern worth taking to a doctor.

That check comes before any symbolic reading, and it is the reason these two records are paired rather than merged.

What the water record contributes is that depth and clarity carry the tone, not the water. Swimming in clear shallow water and swimming over an unseeable bottom are reported completely differently with nothing else changed, and the shark and fish records reach the same conclusion from the animal side.

So: the water sets the feeling, and the breathing sets whether this is a dream to interpret at all.

The two records

Each is a full entry in its own right, and each covers ground this page does not.

  • Water

Water is the most frequently reported dream element, and its readings are unusually consistent across traditions: emotion, the unconscious, and whatever is too large to be argued with. Depth and clarity carry most of the meaning.

  • Drowning

Drowning dreams combine water with suffocation, and the breathing element deserves checking first: nasal congestion, sleep apnoea and a heavy duvet all plausibly contribute.

Worth asking

Could I breathe? Could I see the bottom? Do I wake gasping at other times?
