Two records together

An exam and the school you went to

The original anxiety dream, still reported by people forty years past their last exam, and the pairing is what makes the age pattern visible.

What the combination adds

The exam dream is reported by adults in their fifties and sixties, in the specific rooms of schools they left decades ago, with a clarity they cannot summon awake.

That combination is the finding. Neither the exam nor the school is recent, and both arrive together. Old settings and the people who belonged to them recur far out of proportion to how much anybody thinks about them, and this is the strongest instance of it.

The structure is the one this database returns to constantly: judgement delivered, and the thing being judged left blank. Dreamers describe a subject they never studied, a paper they cannot read, and complete acceptance that they should have prepared.

These are reported most heavily by people who are performing perfectly well. It is not a verdict, and the workplace versions, the interview and the boss, are the same dream with different furniture.

The two records

Each is a full entry in its own right, and each covers ground this page does not.

  • Examination

The exam dream is the most reported anxiety dream there is, it persists for decades after leaving education, and there is some evidence that having it before a real exam is associated with doing better.

  • School

School dreams persist for decades after leaving and are overwhelmingly anxious, being unprepared, lost, or back without knowing why. They are one of the best-documented dream types there is.

Worth asking

Which school, and which room? What was the subject? What am I actually being assessed on at the moment?
