Smell

Dreaming about a smell

Can you smell things in dreams?

Smell is the rarest sense in dream reports by a wide margin, which makes any dream containing one worth recording.

It appears in a small fraction of reports, far below sight and sound. The reliable producers across this whole database are a short list: smoke, burning, spoiled milk, spoiled meat, and occasionally cooking.

When it does appear it is nearly always familiar rather than novel: a person's perfume, a house, a hospital, cut grass, and dreamers identify it immediately.

That pattern fits what is known about olfactory memory, which is unusually durable and unusually tied to specific episodes.

Where this reads well

A genuinely rare dream feature, and one an ordinary journal can add real evidence to.

Where it is harder

None.

Worth asking yourself

What was it? Did I recognise it? Was it familiar or new?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
