Why can I never follow instructions in a dream?
The reason is mechanical rather than symbolic: a set of steps has to persist while being carried out, and dream content does not persist.
The dreamer is told what to do, begins, and cannot recall the next step. That is not a memory failure on the dreamer's part. Nothing was stored, so there is nothing to retrieve.
The searched bag, the library aisle and the hidden object all demonstrate the same thing: dreams generate and do not keep. Instructions are the version where the loss has immediate consequences.
