Dreaming about graduation
Almost never a dream about finishing. The characteristic report is discovering, at the ceremony, that something was never completed, and it is one of the more specific anxiety dreams there is.

The brief waking doubt is the distinctive cost. Dreamers describe genuinely wondering whether they finished, which few other dreams produce.
It is a mild dream otherwise.
Psychological perspectives
This is the examination dream displaced in time: an assessment that was passed is retrospectively unpicked.
That is an unusual structure and it suggests these dreams are less about being tested than about whether anything is ever actually finished, which is a distinction dreamers often recognise when it is put to them.
The persistence across decades matches the wider examination finding.
Cultural and historical
Ceremonies marking a completed passage are close to universal, and the anxiety attached to them, that one is not entitled to what is being conferred, is an old feeling with a modern setting.
