Ears and hearing

Dreaming you cannot hear clearly

What does it mean to dream you cannot hear properly?

Hearing failures are reported more than hearing itself, which fits the general scarcity of sound in dreams: it is easier for a dream to produce the absence of hearing than the content of it.

Dreamers describe hearing as though through something, and describe straining.

The physical check comes first, as everywhere in the body section. A pillow over an ear, congestion, a fan, a blocked ear. Sleep does not close the ears, and a dream will build around whatever it is receiving.

Where nothing physical accounts for it, this belongs with the fog material: a condition that removes information rather than an event.

Where this reads well

Frequently resolves to something checkable, which is unusual and useful.

Where it is harder

Straining to hear is wearing and dreamers report waking tired.

Worth asking yourself

Was anything covering my ears? Do I have any hearing trouble awake? What was I straining to hear?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
