What is the butterfly dream?
The most important thing ever written about dreaming, and it is worth stating properly because it is usually reduced to a slogan.
Zhuangzi dreamt he was a butterfly, and woke unable to establish whether he was a man who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly now dreaming it was a man.
The point is not that dreams are confusing. It is that from inside the state there is no test you can run. Nothing in the dream told him it was a dream, and nothing on waking proved which side he was on.
This database takes that seriously, which is why the reality checks matter so much: hands, text, light switches, a clock read twice. Those are the closest thing to an answer anybody has, and Zhuangzi is the question they exist to address.
