Birth

Dreaming about a birth going wrong

What does it mean to dream about complications during a birth?

The most distressing version and the one most likely to send somebody looking for a meaning at four in the morning, so it is worth being plain: these dreams do not predict anything about a pregnancy, anybody's.

During pregnancy they are extremely common. Anxiety about an event that cannot be controlled, is being anticipated for months, and matters enormously is exactly the condition that produces anxiety dreams, and the dream reaches for the worst available version because that is what anxiety dreams do.

Outside pregnancy these are much rarer, and dreamers usually connect them to something else they are trying to bring about and afraid of losing.

Where this reads well

None to manufacture. The useful thing is knowing the dream is a symptom of the worry rather than information about the outcome.

Where it is harder

Where a dreamer has lost a pregnancy, these belong with the grief material and should be handled as such rather than interpreted.

Worth asking yourself

Am I pregnant, or close to somebody who is? What was I afraid of specifically? Has this recurred?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
