Dreaming that you are drunk
What does it mean to dream you cannot walk or speak properly?
Reported, and worth separating because the content is not really about alcohol.
Dreamers describe unsteadiness, slurred speech and not being able to make the body do what they intend. Every one of those is something dreams produce anyway.
The speech failure, the legs that will not obey, the world that will not stay level: this database describes all of them at length in dreamers who were entirely sober in the dream. Drunkenness is one of the few available explanations for that combination, so the dream reaches for it.
Which means the alcohol may be the dream's account of a state rather than a subject in its own right, in the same way a mask explains obstructed breathing.

A neat instance of the dream supplying a reason for its own limitations, which dreamers find satisfying.
Where it is harder
Where somebody is in recovery, this version can be as distressing as the first and the same reassurance applies.
