Why dreams feel real while you are in them
The most obvious question about dreaming, and one of the more interesting answers: the part of the brain that would object is turned down.

Inside a dream, absurdities pass without comment. Your dead grandmother is in your office, you are late for an exam at a school you left twenty years ago, and none of it raises a question.
The leading account
Neuroimaging shows reduced activity in dorsolateral prefrontal regions during REM: areas associated with critical judgement, working memory and self-monitoring. Meanwhile limbic and visual regions are highly active.
So you get vivid imagery and strong emotion, with the faculty that would normally say hang on running at reduced capacity.
The evidence from the other direction
Lucid dreaming supports this. When people become lucid, when the critical faculty comes back online mid-dream, frontal activity increases. Lucidity looks, neurologically, like recovering some of that judgement without waking.
What this means practically
It is why reality checks work. You are not trying to spot something impossible; impossible things are everywhere. You are trying to build a habit strong enough to run without the faculty that would normally prompt it.
It is also why dream bizarreness is not evidence of anything meaningful. The strangeness is the medium, not the message.
What this predicts, and what the reports show
If critical judgement is running at reduced capacity, you would expect a specific pattern: large impossibilities passing without comment, while things that require two facts to agree with each other sometimes get caught.
That is exactly what the record database finds. A talking animal, a bus driving underwater, two of the same person, a house with a floor that was not there: all reported and all accepted at the time. Meanwhile a shadow pointing the wrong way for the light, a clock read twice, or text that changes between glances is what tips dreamers off.
Why that distinction matters practically
It tells you which reality checks are worth building a habit around. Do not look for something strange, because strangeness does not register. Look for something that has to agree with something else.
Text against itself. A hand against a second glance at the same hand. A shadow against a light source. Those are the checks that work, and this lesson is the reason why.
Practice
Record a dream and mark every point where something impossible happened that you accepted at the time. The count is the finding: reduced evaluation is what makes a dream feel real from inside it.
