Theta waves and the edge of sleep
The band of drowsiness and light sleep, and of the strange imagery that arrives as you drop off.

Where they appear
Theta becomes prominent as alpha drops away at sleep onset, and characterises light non-REM sleep. It is the band of the drowsy state rather than of deep sleep or of full waking.
Why this band matters to dreamers
The theta-dominant transition is where hypnagogic imagery occurs: the faces, patterns, fragments of speech and falling sensations that arrive as you drift off. That imagery is not yet dreaming in the REM sense (it tends to be static, brief and without narrative) but it is the closest most people get to watching consciousness change state from the inside.

The hypnic jerk
The sudden whole-body twitch as you fall asleep belongs to this transition. It is common, harmless, and more frequent when short of sleep or when caffeine is on board.
A caution about the band
Theta gets attributed a great deal (meditation, creativity, "the theta state") on thin ground. The reliable statements are narrow: theta is prominent in drowsiness and light sleep, and that transition is where hypnagogic imagery is reported.
What you can actually observe
Most of this section describes things you can only see on a recording. This band is the exception, and it is worth taking the chance.
Hypnagogic imagery is theta-dominant transition seen from the inside. Faces, patterns, fragments of speech, the sensation of falling. It arrives nightly, it is available to anybody, and almost nobody writes any of it down.
If you want one observation from the whole brain-waves track that is genuinely yours, it is this one: notice what arrives as you fall asleep, and record it before it goes.
Why the WILD technique lives here
That technique is an attempt to stay conscious through this transition rather than to enter a dream from waking sleep. It is difficult for a reason this band explains: the state is brief, and attending to it closely tends to pull you back towards alpha and waking.
Which is why WILD reports so often describe getting close and losing it. That is not poor technique. It is what happens when the thing you are observing is disturbed by observing it.
Practice
Notice the images that arrive as you fall asleep and write down whatever survives. Hypnagogic imagery is the closest thing to a direct observation of this stage that you can make without equipment.
