Sleep cycles: how a night is structured
Sleep runs in roughly 90-minute cycles, and the mix changes across the night. This is why your most vivid dreams arrive just before you wake.

A night's sleep is not uniform. It runs in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, each moving through lighter and deeper non-REM stages and then into REM.
The important part for dreamers is that the proportions change across the night. Deep non-REM sleep dominates the first half; REM periods get longer as the night goes on. The final REM period before waking can run 45 minutes or more.
What follows from that
- Your most vivid, most narrative dreams are usually the last ones. They are also the ones you are most likely to remember, because you woke from them.
- Cutting sleep short cuts REM disproportionately. Losing the last 90 minutes of an eight-hour night removes a large share of the night's dreaming.
- Waking mid-cycle rather than at the end of one is part of why some mornings feel so much worse than others.
Why this matters for the journal
If you want to remember more dreams, the highest-leverage change is usually not a technique. It is sleeping long enough to reach the late REM periods at all. The pattern dashboard plots recall against sleep duration for exactly this reason.
The ninety minutes is an average, not a clock
The figure is quoted so often that people try to time alarms to it. It is a population average, individual cycles vary considerably, and they vary within one night for the same person.
So the useful version of this is not arithmetic. It is the shape: early cycles are weighted towards deep non-REM, late cycles towards long REM. Anything that shortens the night removes the REM-heavy end rather than taking an even slice.
What that means for the two things people actually want
For recall, sleep long enough to reach the late cycles. This outperforms every technique on this site, and it is why the recall lessons keep returning to sleep duration rather than to method.
For feeling rested, consistency of timing does more than total hours. Going to bed at wildly different times moves everything, and the sleep log will show you your own variation faster than any calculation will.
Practice
Log your bed time and wake time for five nights without changing anything. Then count backwards in ninety-minute blocks from each waking. You are looking for whether your natural wakings cluster near the end of a cycle rather than in the middle of one.
