Alpha waves and relaxed waking
The first brain rhythm ever recorded in a human, and the one that has to disappear before you can fall asleep.

The one that started it
Alpha is the rhythm Hans Berger recorded in 1929 in the first human EEG. Every band discussed on these pages descends from that recording. The naming convention exists because alpha was found first.
Its defining behaviour is still the easiest EEG demonstration there is: alpha appears when the eyes close and attenuates when they open.
Why it matters for sleep
Sleep onset is marked, in clinical scoring, by alpha dropping away and theta taking over. Falling asleep is in a real sense the disappearance of this rhythm.
That gives it a practical significance: a mind that will not stop working keeps alpha suppressed. The advice about winding down before bed is, in EEG terms, about letting alpha return.
What it is not
Alpha is not a state of enlightenment, and "alpha training" claims run far ahead of the evidence. It is the resting rhythm of a relaxed visual cortex. That is genuinely interesting, and it is also all it is.
The demonstration you can reason through
Alpha blocking is the reason this band was understood so quickly. Close the eyes and the rhythm appears; open them and it attenuates. It is reliable enough that it was used as a working test of an EEG rig long before anybody agreed what alpha meant.
What that tells you is narrow and useful: alpha is not "relaxation" in the everyday sense. It is closely tied to the visual system being idle. A person who is tense but sitting with their eyes shut will still show it.
Why the claims run so far ahead
Alpha was found first, it is easy to record, and it responds to something anybody can do on demand. That combination made it the band consumer devices and training programmes reach for.
The reliable statement is the one above and it is genuinely interesting on its own. Everything beyond it, that alpha is a gateway state, a creative mode, or something to be trained towards, is running well past what the recording supports.
Practice
Sit with your eyes closed for two minutes without trying to sleep, then open them. Alpha is associated with relaxed wakefulness with the eyes shut, and the shift on opening them is the transition this lesson describes.
