Dreaming about somebody you miss on waking

Why do I miss somebody from a dream who is not real?

Reported far more often than people admit, and worth a page because dreamers frequently find it embarrassing and assume it is unusual. It is not.

Dream emotion is generated by the same machinery as waking emotion and does not check whether its object exists. The attachment is real, was really felt, and the fact that nobody was there does not make the feeling counterfeit.

What dreamers describe is the residue outlasting every detail: the face goes, the name goes, the situation goes, and the missing stays, sometimes for days.

Where this reads well

Naming it helps, and several dreamers describe relief at learning it is common rather than a sign of loneliness.

Where it is harder

It can be genuinely disruptive, and dreamers occasionally compare real relationships unfavourably to it. That is worth noticing rather than indulging.

Worth asking yourself

How long did the feeling last? What do I actually remember of them? Was it them, or the way I felt?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
