What does it mean to dream an animal is hidden nearby?
The stripes are mentioned unprompted with striking regularity, and almost always in connection with the animal being hard to see against something.
That is an unusual amount of visual detail for a dream to supply, and it is doing work: the dream needs the animal to be present and unlocated, and the pattern is the reason it can be both.
It is the same arrangement as the darkness a torch will not penetrate and the fog that hides nothing in particular. The dream declines to render what is beyond attention, and supplies a reason why.
