Mother

Dreaming about a mother who looks wrong

What does it mean to dream your mother is not really your mother?

A specific and unsettling variant: the dreamer knows this is their mother while also knowing the face, voice or manner is wrong. That double knowledge is characteristic of dreaming and does not need explaining away.

It sits close to the doppelgänger and faceless-person material, and where the wrongness is the dominant feature, those pages are the better fit.

Where this reads well

Rare, and where it appears at all it is usually the recognition arriving late in the dream, which dreamers describe as a considerable relief. Very few report the dream continuing comfortably after the wrongness has been noticed.

Where it is harder

Reported during periods of estrangement, and by dreamers whose parent has changed markedly through illness, dementia in particular. That second group deserves naming plainly: a dream about a mother who is present and not herself, from somebody watching exactly that happen, is continuous with waking life rather than symbolic of anything, and reading it as a message would be the wrong thing to do with it.

Worth asking yourself

What exactly was wrong? Did I say anything about it in the dream?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
