Why is it unsettling that I could not tell if it was looking at me?
The eye is mentioned often, and specifically the difficulty of telling whether the animal is looking at them. That uncertainty is the reported source of the unease.
Dreamers describe the absence of a readable face more often than they describe the lizard.
