Laughing

Dreaming about something being funny that makes no sense afterwards

Why was it so funny in the dream and not afterwards?

The characteristic report is that the joke does not survive.

Dreamers describe something being extremely funny in the dream and being unable to reconstruct why on waking.

That is the same failure as the unretained diagnosis, the unreadable letter and the announcement with no words: the dream produced the response and never produced the content. The feeling of a joke is cheap; a joke is expensive.

It is one of the better demonstrations of that split, because humour requires content in a way that dread and guilt do not, and yet the reports show the same shape exactly.

Where this reads well

A cheerful and unusually clear instance of affect arriving without content.

Where it is harder

None, beyond mild disappointment at not being able to explain it.

Worth asking yourself

Can I reconstruct any of it? Was there a joke at all? How funny did it seem?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
