Dreaming somebody becomes somebody else
What does it mean when a person changes into another person mid-dream?
A third form, and the most striking: the person becomes somebody else, the dreamer accepts it, and frequently carries the new identity backwards over the earlier part of the dream.
That retroactive rewriting has no waking equivalent. The earlier conversation was with the new person all along, as far as the dreamer is concerned.
It shows that the label on a character is held separately from the character, can be changed, and that nothing goes back to check consistency, because there is no record to check against.
None of this is objected to at the time. The objection arrives on waking, which is the important detail and the one that unites all three scenarios here.

The backwards application is what dreamers find impossible to convey, and they frequently give up trying.
