Birds are among the oldest recorded dream images and among the most consistently read as messengers, which is a cultural inheritance rather than a finding. The reports themselves turn on whether the bird was free, trapped, or in the house.

Birds carry more accumulated interpretive weight than almost any animal, because divination by bird predates dream manuals and fed into them. Roman augury read the flight of birds directly, and the messenger association arrives in dream interpretation already fully formed.
The reports cluster in a way that has nothing to do with messages. A bird trapped indoors is the single most distinctive one and is described with real urgency. Birds in flight are usually incidental and pleasant. A dead or injured bird is reported soberly and is frequently connected by the dreamer to something ending.
A flock behaving strangely is its own report and is one of the more unsettling animal dreams people describe.

Difficult readings
A bird trapped in a room is reported with a specific and consistent panic, and dreamers describe the noise and the sense of the animal hurting itself.
Birds attacking, or a flock turning, are reported less often but land hard, and their structure belongs with threat dreams generally.
Dead birds are reported soberly rather than fearfully, which distinguishes them from most animal-death reports.
Psychological perspectives
Continuity accounts for little here, since most people have limited contact with birds. That makes the frequency of the trapped-bird dream interesting rather than explicable, and the honest position is that nobody knows why it is as common as it is.
The soul association across unrelated traditions is a genuine puzzle in comparative material and is usually attributed to the shared observation that a bird leaves and a body does not.
Cultural and historical
Augury, the reading of bird flight for signs, is one of the oldest documented divinatory practices in Europe and fed directly into dream interpretation.
The bird as soul appears in Egyptian, Greek, Celtic and numerous other traditions independently. The bird-in-the-house-means-a-death superstition is a specific and still-current British and Irish folk belief with no evidential basis whatsoever, and it is worth naming because it frightens people who have grown up with it.

Animal content is more common in children's dreams, and birds appear in that literature.
No evidential basis exists for any of the omen readings, including the bird-in-the-house superstition, which is the one most likely to distress a dreamer.
