The Crawling Figure

Something approaching that never arrives

Why does it stop before it reaches me?

Approach is what separates this sharply from the corner figure and the watcher. It comes closer, usually slowly, and the episode ends before arrival.

The ending before arrival is near universal and worth stating plainly: as with almost everything in this database, the thing does not conclude.

That is the same non-arrival the chase, the fog and the unopened door produce. Two readings are available and the reports cannot separate them: either dreams are poorly equipped to continue past a resolution, or the arousal that produces the approach is what wakes the sleeper.

Knowing it ends is worth having in advance, because the approach is the whole of the fear.

What the reports agree on

The near-universal non-arrival is real, and dreamers who know it report the episodes as more survivable.

Where they differ, and what to be careful of

Slow approach is more effective than speed, and it is why these are remembered.

Worth recording if this was yours

How close did it get? Did I wake, or did it stop? Had it started far away?

Dream interpretation is subjective. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prediction, or medical advice.
